Counting visits
I use Google Analytics to count visits. Which pages get read and which get abandoned is the only signal I have about what to fix.
It sees the pages you open, the site that sent you, your rough location, and the kind of device you are on. It leaves an identifier in your browser so your second page does not count as a second person. It never learns your name, and I never see one.
The law calls my reason a legitimate interest, which is the formal way of saying I am allowed to count and you are allowed to refuse. Refusing takes one click, on the "Don't count me" button in the notice at the bottom of the page. It is a real switch, not a gesture. After it, nothing is sent, on this visit or any visit later.
Google does the counting for me. Some of it reaches the United States, covered by the EU-US Data Privacy Framework. Nothing detailed is kept longer than 14 months.
If you type your email
It goes to Substack, which runs my newsletter, and it stops there. These pages are files on a server with nothing behind them, so there is nowhere here to keep it. Substack holds the list and sends the mail under its own privacy policy. Every email has an unsubscribe link, and it works.
What any website sees
Two more things happen when a page opens, and you should hear them from me rather than find them. GitHub serves these pages and sees the address your request came from, the way every web server does. The fonts load from Google, which sees it too.
Your rights
Ask what I hold about you, ask for it to be corrected or deleted, or object to the counting. Write to hello@joannatu.com and you get an answer inside a month. If you think I handled it badly, the Polish data protection authority takes complaints at uodo.gov.pl.
